Variation in Fish Abundance, Diversity and Assemblage Structure in Seagrass Meadows across the Atlanto-Mediterranean Province

چکیده
Seagrasses worldwide provide key habitats for fish assemblages. Biogeographical disparities in ocean climate conditions and seasonal regimes are well-known drivers of the spatial temporal variation seagrass structure, with potential effects on associated Whether taxonomically disparate assemblages support a similar range ecological functions remains poorly tested ecosystems. In this study, we examined abundance, diversity (from taxonomic functional perspective), assemblage structure community inhabiting nine meadows Cymodocea nodosa across three regions Mediterranean (Mallorca Alicante) adjacent Atlantic (Gran Canaria), identified which attributes typifying meadows, large-scale variability climate, contributed most to explaining such variation. Despite total number species between Mallorca Gran Canaria, latter region had more functionally diverse relative western regions, translated into differences multivariate structure. While abundance conspicuous was largely explained by structural descriptors, accounted descriptor (mean SST), operating at regional scales. Variation was, lesser extent, also local Beyond climatic drivers, our results suggest that lower canopy C. Canaria provides consistent source food protection assemblages, likely enhances abundant there.

Trophic cascades in seagrass meadows depend on mesograzer variation in feeding rates, predation susceptibility, and abundance
Seagrasses provide important habitat for fishes and invertebrates but are declining around the globe, often due to overgrowth by algae. One hypothesis for this overgrowth is that overfishing of top consumers has led to greater numbers of small predatory fishes that reduce the abundance of mesograzers. This trophic cascade hypothesis requires that the same species that control algal biomass are ...
متن کاملFish assemblage in a semi-arid Neotropical reservoir: composition, structure and patterns of diversity and abundance.
The aim of this study was to analyse the composition, structure and spatial and temporal patterns of diversity and abundance of the ichthyofauna of the Santa Cruz Reservoir in semi-arid Brazil. Data were collected quarterly at eight sampling locations on the reservoir between February 2010 and November 2011 using gillnets from 12- to 70-mm mesh that were left in the water for 12h00min during th...
متن کاملVariation in biogeochemical parameters across intertidal seagrass meadows in the central Great Barrier Reef region.
This survey provides baseline information on sediment characteristics, porewater, adsorbed and plant tissue nutrients from intertidal coastal seagrass meadows in the central region of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. Data collected from 11 locations, representative of intertidal coastal seagrass beds across the region, indicated that the chemical environment was typical of other trop...
متن کاملPhylogenetic community structure: temporal variation in fish assemblage
Hypotheses about phylogenetic relationships among species allow inferences about the mechanisms that affect species coexistence. Nevertheless, most studies assume that phylogenetic patterns identified are stable over time. We used data on monthly samples of fish from a single lake over 10 years to show that the structure in phylogenetic assemblages varies over time and conclusions depend heavil...
